I love this post. Although you're referencing your expereiences in Phoenix and Florida, it still sounds like a lot that happens here in Chicago. To everyone, a green light means go and yellow light means go faster. When you get to the intersection if the light is red, screw it. You're already 100ft from the line, just go through it. <.<

Old people are the worst with this. My own grandfather, included, runs red lights, hits parked cars and drives away, doesnt stop at stop signs, and merges without looking.

My favorite thing people do is when in a double turn lane, the person in the lane closest to the median murges into the second turning lane after completing the turn. Right into the person next to them. I've been the victim so many times.

My driving isn't the best, but I can prove my good record with no speeding tickets... On my current car of 2 years. Prior, that's another story... And I still haven't gotten caught.

Cops, however, are very strict when it comes to traffic laws. If they see something happen that is potentially hazardous, they pull you over. Tailgaiting, speeding, cutting people off, etc. And ANY violation is accompanied by a $300+ ticket, court costs, and driving school.

Red light cameras are all over the place. Unlike Florida, Illinois doesn't see an issue with them. I received a red light ticket in the mail for turning on red. Apparently, I was moving too fast. Watching the video, I never came to a complete stop, but I wasn't flying through the intersection, either.

On the highway its a completely different ballgame. I-355, I-290, and I-90 are all roads that contain drivers of the aggrivated tailgating kind. Also contains opposite drivers. For example, someone will go 90 (speed limits are 55) in the 'slow' lane and get pissed off if someone is in front of them. They wont go around. They just sit there and honk.

As for the opposite drivers, they sit in the 'faster' lanes and drive at speeds of up to 45 mph! Even then they ride their brakes like as if they're about to collide with a pie truck, a clown car, and a seltzer water delivery van. What a show that would be.

Ugh! What is it WITH this state? I had initially worried I'd offend people in other parts of the state but it sounds like they all drive crazy no matter where you are in Florida!!! And yes I agree Florida is flat and straight. I'm originally from Seattle where, if you lost control of your car, you'd end up in a lake or something. Crazy Florida.

Thanks for the comment. :)

Oh wow I'm glad that it's an all over Florida thing and not just a Jacksonville deal. I kind of worried I made a blanket statement or something and might offend the southern part of the state but am glad this whole state drives crazy (wait... I don't think that is a good thing). Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the post. :)

Oh my GOD! I love your post. I have lived in Tampa Bay for 35 years and I do concur with everything you said. I would stretch the wait at the green light to about 10 seconds, as there is also the chance the Ambulance Driver or Patrol Car may suddenly get the urge to flip the light on and come out of nowhere, THEN watch the drives trying to get out of the way heading straight at you! Always best to be extra cautious!

PS - I love you. LMAO This article is SO TRUE. God, I don't miss driving in Florida but seriously - Paul, my husband, WOULD NOT SURVIVE WITHOUT ME. He's from KS and to top it off, he grew up in SMALL TOWN, KS. We would have DIED if I hadn't have driven through ATL on our way down here. We still might die if I ever let him drive around here. He does NOT like city driving, period. He manages to handle the "city" driving in KS but seriously, it's CAKE compared to FL. Well... unless it's the first snow or rain of the year. Then it's like playing RISK with your soul.

I live in Orlando and I completely undertsand what you mean.. I despise I-4 and driving downtown (orlando) makes me want to slit my wrists.
And when it rains...Oh my effin god. I'm orginally from PA so driving in rain is not as bad as driving in whiteout snow and ice.
Seriously Florida, its flat and straight, how can you suck at driving soo much?!?

Oh wow you've seen cop cars do that? I've yet to see that but have to agree with you that they are much worse then the 5 second rule. I guess I was just feeling really nice when I wrote that section, lol. It's especially bad out at JAX Beach... especially with all the spring breakers.

I live in Jacksonville. I agree with all you said but want to add to the red light rule. The 5 second rule is being nice, I have never been any place so bad about red lights. People here consider them just sort of a general guide line but not to be concerned with unless the traffic in the other direction actually comes out and challenges you for the space. I have seen police cars be the fifth or sixth car through a red light.
